Artist's Statement
Color is my passion. I collect glass and sometimes wait for decades
to hear it tell me what it should become. I love the way light changes
the appearance of glass. The same piece appears infinitely different
as God turns the sun light on and off each day.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Karen Deets recently retired from 31 years as owner of Off the Wall
Craft Gallery in Allentown, NJ. There she supported many artisans
and jewelers in the selling of their work. Now its her time to concentrate
on what she loves best - glass!
Deets has had a lifelong interest in all of the arts, but found
her passion in craft media. Deets earned her way through college
doing leather work which she continued until 1988. It overlapped
with her pursuit of glass art, which she began in 1976, in the desire
to find more permanency and color in her creations.
In 1980 Deets' work was featured in a NYC gallery show, where she
was commissioned to create a series of large panels in the style
of Chagall’s Jerusalem Windows. She has sold pieces at the
Artful Deposit Gallery. Much of her work is private commissions,
but she has really enjoyed making the pieces that were sold at her
own gallery. Her current work incorporates a lot of beveled glass
and European hand blown glass. Deets has plans to learn new techniques
including fused glass, painted and fired glass, and for a little
fun, mosaics.
Deets holds a degree in Art Education from TCNJ/Trenton State College.
She left a short career as an elementary art teacher to become a
full time artist/entrepreneur.
Deets glass studio is located in a 100 year old carriage house on
S. Main St. in Allentown. Appointments are welcome.
